CZ SP01 Tactical

Of all the handgun manufactures, one that has really begun to shine in recent years for their quality and affordability is CZ-USA, the US based subsidy and importer of CZUB, known commonly as CZ. For those who may be scratching their head CZUB stands for Česká zbrojovka Uherský Brod and they are a Czech firearms manufacturer. While most handguns today are made of ballistic polymer, CZ continues to produce many of their handguns the old fashioned way with all steel or alloy based frames .(CZ has recently begun to produce a polymer line as well but that’s a whole other discussion.) CZ’s initial claim to fame was the CZ 75, developed in 1975, it is considered by many firearms historians as one of the “wonder nines” of the early 80’s. The “wonder nines” ushered in the dominance of the reliable and accurate 9mm Luger, today 9mm Luger is the most popular handgun cartridge.

CZ still produces an updated CZ 75 under the moniker CZ75B, but todays review is on the CZSP01 Tactical. The SP01 and its variants were developed by CZ to update the CZ 75 to the specifications of NATO countries as a full sized duty weapon. All Sp01’s are DA/SA hammer fired pistols with a 4.6” barrel, as well as feature a full length dust cover with picatinny slots to accept laser and light attachments. The SP01 Tactical is a variant of the SP01 family, which share all the same features of a standard SP01 other than, the Tactical model features an ambidextrous de-cocking lever as opposed to a safety selector lever. The SP01 Tactical also has night sights installed from the factory, a nice touch for a home defense pistol. Being all steel the SP01 Tactical is a heavy pistol at 40.7 ounces, but this weight makes shooting 9mm a piece of cake. The CZ SP01 Tactical is a perfect home defense pistol, quality recreational range tool or if desired a serious competition pistol. At only $679 it is also very affordable. The stock pistols have a fairly heavy double action but a short light single action.

One of my favorite features about the CZ SP01 Tactical and for most CZ pistols is the significant proliferation of aftermarket parts. These parts can improve many aspects of the SP01 Tactical such as reducing the weight of both the single and double action trigger pulls. Company’s likes CZCustom and Cajun Gun Works produce high quality aftermarket parts from new barrels, action parts, grips and magazine extensions. These modifications allow a large level of customization and several of our staff are very familiar with CZ handguns, so if desired our guys in the shop can install the parts for you.

As an example of what is possible above is my personal USPSA production pistol. It is a Shadow variant of the SP01 that was extensively modified by CZCustom, with a special accuracy bushing, competition sights, springs, grips and grip tape. While every shooter may not need to go to the extent I did which yields a crisp ~2.5# single action and a ~6.5# double action, almost all of the upgrades on this pistol can be applied or installed to the CZ SP01 Tactical.

As noted the CZ SP01 Tactical is a versatile handgun that won’t let you down. Give us a call if you’re looking for more information on the CZ SP01, or any CZ in general, or to get your hands on one of these handguns.
